THE Rocchetta Mattei

Make sure to visit The Rocchetta Mattei, an unparalleled architectural treasure just half an hour away by car from Pieve di Panico.

The castle owes its name to Count Cesare Mattei (1809-1896) who had it built on the ruins of an ancient building dating back to the 13th century, the Rocca di Savignano.

The structure of the castle was modified several times by the count during his lifetime and by his heirs, making it a labyrinth of towers, monumental staircases, reception rooms, private chambers that recall different styles: from neo-medieval to neo-Renaissance, from Moorish to Liberty.

Gugliemo Maconi’s Mausoleum

The Marconi Museum is dedicated to the birth and development of radio-communication. The museum is located in Villa Griffone, in the village of Pontevecchio Marconi, the historical country home of the family of Gugliemo Marconi

It was within this country retreat – the structure of which remains intact – that the young inventor carried out his first decisive experiments in radiotelegraphy in the years 1894-1895.

The museum is home to functioning replicas of various scientific apparatus dating from the end of the 19th century, a number of modern communication devices, and a series of teaching tools guiding museumgoers through the history of electricity and radio.

Some years after the death of the inventor, a mausoleum was erected at the entrance of the villa to provide a final resting place for Marconi and his second wife, Maria Cristina Bezzi Scali.
